Our Story

Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) – Solano/Napa Chapter
The Solano/Napa Chapter of Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) is adynamic, nonpartisan organization committed to advancing the political, social, educational and economic empowerment of Black women and the broader community across Solano and Napa counties.
The Solano/Napa Chapter was launched with a powerful show of unity and purpose. At its inaugural meeting in 2018, more than 50 Black women—representing diverse backgrounds, generations, professions, and lived experiences—came together with passion, pride, and a shared commitment to building political power and strengthening civic engagement

Our Chapter’s Beginning
The chapter’s inaugural convening at the Green Hive in Vallejo marked a historic moment. Under the leadership of charter chapter president K. Patrice Williams, JD, the meeting reflected broad community support, including allies who recognize the importance of Black women’s leadership in shaping equitable policy and representation. The chapter stands on the foundation of BWOPA’s statewide legacy, guided by our founders in 1968, including Dezie Woods-Jones, who administered the swearing-in of the chapter’s inaugural officers. The following presidents include Deborah Dickson and Dr. Latressa Wilson Alford.

Our Legacy & Impact
The Solano/Napa Chapter was established in response to clear disparities in civic participation and representation, and community frustration with low voter turnout and the limited presence of Black elected officials. In response, BWOPA Solano/Napa took action to:

  • Increase voter registration and civic engagement

  • Expand issue awareness and political education

  • Support the appointment and election of Black women to boards, commissions, and public office

  • Build a pipeline of future leaders, including youth engagement initiatives

Our successes include:

  • Black Voter Registration Campaign,

  • Black Women’s Mental Health Luncheon,

  • Census and CA Redistricting outreach and advocacy,

  • Black-N-Vaxxed coordination with Touro University,

  • Legislative Learning Day in Sacramento with high schools, and

  • the Solano County Kamala Harris for President Headquarters in Vallejo.

OUR Vision

BWOPA Solano/Napa is committed to ensuring that Black women not only participate in democracy—but lead it with power, purpose, and vision.

OUR MISSION

BWOPA Solano/Napa is dedicated to:

  • Activate and motivate Black women to engage in the political process

  • Educate and empower communities on issues impacting Black families

  • Promote leadership and increase representation in public office

  • Support candidates and policies that advance equity and justice

  • Address systemic challenges affecting Black communities

We focus our work on critical issues, including education, health care, criminal justice reform, and economic security — areas that directly impact the well-being and advancement of our communities.
